Sports First Aid Level 3 (VTQ)

This course is ideal for individuals, groups and professionals involved in sport, fitness and physical activity who may need to respond to injuries or medical emergencies during training or competition. It provides practical first aid skills specific to sporting environments, covering both injury management and emergency care. The qualification is delivered over one day and certification is valid for three years.

1 day course (minimum 7 guided learning hours).

This course will enable the student to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider during sporting activities
  • Be able to assess an incident and ensure scene safety
  • Understand common injuries and illnesses associated with sporting activity
  • Provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty, including CPR and use of an AED
  • Place an unresponsive casualty into the recovery position and monitor breathing
  • Provide first aid to a casualty who is choking (adult and child)
  • Control external bleeding and manage shock
  • Recognise and manage fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Apply support and elevated slings correctly
  • Provide first aid for head injuries and suspected spinal injuries
  • Recognise and respond to chest injuries including fractured ribs
  • Assess and manage common sports-related illnesses
  • Carry out injury and illness assessments and determine appropriate action
  • Follow incident reporting and referral procedures

This qualification is suitable for sports coaches, fitness instructors, personal trainers, PE staff, team officials and anyone responsible for participant safety during sporting activities.

Course delivery

This course is taught over 1 day and includes both practical and theoretical participation.

Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 7
Total Qualification Time (TQT): 9

There are no formal entry requirements, however learners should have a basic level of literacy and numeracy and be aged 14 years or above.

Progression

Successful learners can progress to other qualifications such as:

  • Level 3 First Aid at Work (VTQ)
  • FAQ Level 3 Certificate for First Responders on Scene (FROS®)
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS)

Certification

On successful completion of the course, learners will receive a ProTrainings certificate. Learners are also provided with online access to a free student manual, CPD statement, refresher resources and supporting documentation.
